Zanzibar Do's and Dont's

  • DON'T buy anything from the sea such as large shells, turtle shells or pieces of coral from street or beach vendors. Buying such items encourages the destruction of our fragile marine eco-system.

  • DO take only photos and leave only footprints (or bubbles if under the sea...)

  • DON'T walk around towns and villages in bikinis, miniskirts, or sleeveless tops. Modest dress is requested of all tourists keeping with the Islamic faith of most of the island's inhabitants. Women should cover their shoulders and wear trousers or skirts that reach below the knee. Men should not walk around without t-shirts.

  • DO swim on our beach at all tides - however, be careful of sea urchins at low tide!

  • DON'T go topless on our beaches. Bikinis and swimwear are acceptable on tourist beaches but not if fishermen or seaweed harvesters are nearby.

  • DO remember that during the month of Ramadan (Muslims fasting) it is at the height of bad manners to eat or drink in public places.

Scuba Do Zanzibar PADI Dive Centre is the best diving on the Zanzibar Archipelego!
